Guía fácil para entender los rayos solares UVA, UVB y el FPS

Lograr el bronceado perfecto puede ser una buena idea cuando tienes veinte años, pero a medida que envejecemos, el bronceado perfecto y exponernos al sol sin protección solar pueden afectar seriamente la piel.  Debemos aprender cómo cuidarla todos los días para asegurar que luzca radiante y joven con el paso de los años.

Cuando se trata de proteger el cuerpo del sol, es importante entender por qué la protección solar es indispensable sin importar tu edad o la época del año.

Para proteger la piel, necesitas estar consciente de los dañinos rayos UVA y UVB. Por lo general vemos estos acrónimos en nuestros productos de protección de la piel, en los cosméticos y en la ropa, pero ¿sabes lo que significan?

  • FPS = Factor de Protección Solar
  • UVA = Ultravioleta A (onda larga)
  • UVB = Ultravioleta B (onda corta)

UVA y UVB son dos tipos diferentes de radiación que pueden dañar tu piel. Para hacerlo simple, recuerda: UVA –A son los rayos que generan el envejecimiento de la piel. Mientras que UVB – B son los rayos que queman la piel.

Los rayos UVA causan el envejecimiento de la piel

Los rayos UVA son responsables del envejecimiento y las arrugas en la piel, y pueden contribuir al cáncer de piel. Constituyen la mayor cantidad de exposición solar debido a que atraviesan fácilmente la capa de ozono. Traspasan las nubes, el vidrio e incluso algunas prendas de vestir.  Puede que no los sientas, pero están presentes y pueden afectar tu piel.

Los rayos UVB pueden causar quemaduras

Los rayos UVB son responsables de las quemaduras de sol y las cataratas, y pueden afectar el sistema inmune. Lo más importante es que los rayos UVB también contribuyen al cáncer de la piel.

El FPS te permite saber cuento tiempo puedes permanecer bajo el sol

Aunque todas las personas son diferentes, el Factor de Protección Solar (FPS) en los productos especializados te da una idea de cuánto tiempo puedes permanecer bajo el sol antes de que la piel comience a enrojecer. El FPS aplica únicamente para los rayos UVB, no para los UVA. El FPS en los productos viene en varios niveles que incluyen: FPS 15, FPS 30, FPS 50 y más.  Así es como funciona: digamos que tu piel comienza a enrojecer después de estar 10 minutos bajo el sol.  Vas a tomar ese número y multiplicarlo por el número del FPS que estás usando.

Por ejemplo, si utilizas un producto con un FPS 30:

– 10 minutos x 30 (FPS) = 300 minutos
– Divide los 300 minutos entre 60 minutos, que equivale a 1 hora
– 300 minutos / 60 minutos = 5
– El resultado: aproximadamente 5 horas de protección estándar contra los rayos solares

Si estás en la playa o te expones directamente a los rayos solares por periodos largos de tiempo, toma precauciones y utiliza protección solar con el factor de protección solar elegido. Es importante no crear una falsa sensación de confianza cuando se trata de la protección solar.  Muchos productos no son resistentes al agua, por lo que no puedes confiar en cinco horas de protección si estas nadando o haciendo ejercicio.  También, la mayoría de los protectores solares son para una exposición solar normal, no para cuando pasas todo el día bajo el sol. Si estás en la playa o haciendo deportes, deberías considerar un protector solar más fuerte que lo usual. Y siempre aplica una, dos o cuantas veces sea necesario.

Diez consejos para el uso de protección solar

  1. Siempre aplica protección solar, cualquiera que sea la temporada.
    2. Cuando compres un protector solar, siempre busca uno que ofrezca “protección de espectro amplio” para protegerte contra los rayos UVA y UVB.
    3. La cantidad apropiada de protector solar para el cuerpo es de 1 oz. (o 30 ml), que es lo suficiente para llenar una copita pequeña. Y necesitas una cucharadita (5 gramos) de protector solar para la cara.
    4. Aplica protector solar por lo menos de 15 a 20 minutos antes de salir al sol. Si la piel está roja por los rayos solares es porque el daño ha comenzado.
    5. Es muy importante proteger las áreas de la piel expuestas al sol, incluyendo las orejas y las zonas sin cabello. Usa ropa que te proteja como camisetas de manga larga, pantalones largos y sombreros de ala ancha.
    6. Utiliza gafas de sol que ofrezcan protección contra los rayos UVA y UVB.  Exponerse a los rayos UVB no solo puede quemar los párpados sino también producir cataratas.
    7. No pienses que estar dentro del carro o mirando a través de una ventana te brinda protección.  Los rayos solares pueden traspasar el cristal. Protégete aunque no te encuentres directamente bajo los rayos solares.
    8. Crea el hábito de aplicar protector solar nuevamente cada dos horas o después de nadar o sudar.
    9. Aléjate del sol durante las horas más calurosas del día y busca las áreas con sombra tanto como sea posible.
    10. Si tienes que broncearte, utiliza un autobronceador (pero recuerda también usar protector solar).

El exponerte al sol sin protección es la causa principal del envejecimiento y del cáncer de piel.  Debemos protegernos todos los días… sin dejar de lucir bien, por supuesto.
