Mitos y realidades del bloqueador solar

Existe mucha información incorrecta acerca del uso de bloqueadores,  pero hoy nos encargaremos de aclararla.

Ya sabemos lo importante que es usar bloqueador. Nos han repetido hasta el cansancio que sin él exponemos la piel a quemaduras, señales prematuras de envejecimiento y, claro, al riesgo de contraer cáncer de piel. Hoy en día, ningún dermatólogo, revista de belleza o publicidad en televisión sobre cuidado de la piel deja de recordarnos la importancia de usar un bloqueador u otro producto de efecto protector. Podemos encontrar un sinfín de productos con factor de protección solar (FPS), desde ropa hasta cosméticos. Pero no todo lo que leemos es del todo cierto. Hablemos sobre algunos de los mitos más comunes acerca del uso del bloqueador y dejemos las cosas claras.

Mito 1: Si mi piel es oscura, no necesito bloqueador

No importa qué tan clara u oscura sea tu piel, usar bloqueador es igual de importante. Todos corremos el riesgo de sufrir quemaduras, envejecimiento prematuro o desarrollar cáncer de piel si no la protegemos. No creas que solo por tener piel oscura no necesitas usar bloqueador. Todos, sin importar nuestro color de piel, debemos usar un bloqueador a diario.

Mito 2: No es necesario usar bloqueador si mi maquillaje ya lo contiene

Antes me encantaba pensar que solo con usar maquillaje ya estaba protegiendo mi piel del sol, pero en realidad se trataba de una falsa idea de seguridad.  Lamentablemente, me he dado cuenta de que la realidad es otra. En la actualidad, parece que todas las bases de maquillaje, polvos ruborizadores y bronceadores contienen un FPS, pero no es suficiente. Por lo general, el maquillaje con FPS no se aplica de manera uniforme sobre la piel. Si lo piensas, casi siempre nos aplicamos un poco de rubor aquí y allá, y una pequeña gota de base. Esto simplemente no te ofrece la protección adecuada. Aunque es estupendo tener ese beneficio extra en las áreas que necesitan más cobertura, es importante que uses una doble protección y también apliques bloqueador. Elige un humectante diario con un FPS 30. Obtendrás humectación y protección solar adicionales en un solo paso.

Mito 3: Si ya me puse bloqueador “a prueba de agua”, no es necesario volver a aplicarlo

Los lineamientos que establece la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos sobre el uso de bloqueadores son cada vez más estrictos. Las normas más recientes prohíben a las compañías usar el término “a prueba de agua” para denominar productos de protección solar. El término correcto es “resistente al agua”. Además de afirmar que es resistente al agua, ahora las compañías deben mencionar si el producto ofrece protección durante 40 u 80 minutos, así como indicar que se debe volver a aplicar al menos cada dos horas, o incluso antes si nadas o comienzas a sudar. Es fácil olvidarse de aplicar bloqueador nuevamente cuando te estás divirtiendo en la playa o la piscina, por eso te recomendamos tener el bloqueador en un lugar visible para que no te olvides de él.  Si no confías en tu memoria, programa una alarma en tu celular u otro dispositivo móvil. El bloqueador puede estar guardado en mi bolsa, pero siempre tengo mi celular a la mano.

Mito 4: Solo necesito bloqueador en ciertas zonas del cuerpo

Si la piel está expuesta al sol, necesita bloqueador; incluyendo pies, orejas, brazos, piernas y cuello.  Si una parte de tu cuerpo se expone al sol, necesita protección. Siempre me preocupo más por mi rostro porque quiero evitar las arrugas y lineas de expresión; pero después de observar mi cuerpo más de cerca me di cuenta de la cruda realidad.  Tengo unas pequeñas manchas en los hombros y en la zona del escote. ¡Hasta mis piernas han sufrido daños por el sol! Cuando era joven no usaba bloqueador por querer alcanzar el bronceado perfecto. Ahora estoy obsesionada con proteger el dorso de mis manos, por lo que siempre tengo bloqueador en el portavasos del coche. Si está expuesta al sol, ¡necesita bloqueador!

Mito 5: Los bloqueadores para adultos no protegen tanto como los de niños

Los bloqueadores contienen los mismos ingredientes activos, sin importar si son para niños o adultos. Si examinas dos productos con el mismo factor de protección solar, su desempeño es muy similar, aunque sean para niños o adultos. Sin embargo, existen diferentes formulaciones y muchos bloqueadores para niños se crearon para pieles más sensibles. Puede que los productos para niños no contengan fragancias, parabenos u otras sustancias; además no producen lágrimas ni provocan ardor en los ojos. Aparte de estas características, el factor de protección solar es bastante confiable.

Mito 6: Un bloqueador para todos los veranos

Si te quedó bloqueador del año pasado lo mejor sería deshacerte de él. Si usas bloqueador todos los días, nunca te quedará producto de sobra en el envase. Una buena regla general es que no trates el bloqueador como un producto de temporada, sino que lo uses todo el año. Siempre revisa la fecha de caducidad del envase. Por lo general, puedes encontrar la fecha de caducidad en la etiqueta o impreso en el borde de los envases en tubo. Nada dura para siempre, y los bloqueadores pierden su eficacia con el tiempo. Siempre revisa la fecha de caducidad y asegúrate de aplicar una cantidad abundante que en verdad proteja tu piel.
